John Gilhooly, Director of Wigmore Hall and Chairman of the Royal Philharmonic Society, had the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art bestowed upon him by the President of Austria this afternoon.
The award is for superior creative and commendable services in the areas of sciences and the arts and was conferred by His Excellency Dr Martin Eichtinger (Austrian Ambassador to the Court of St James), on behalf of the Federal President, at today’s ceremony.
The Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art was created by federal law in 1955. The award honours Austrian or leading international figures who have ‘distinguished themselves and earned general acclaim through especially superior and commendable services in the areas of the sciences or the arts’.
